Main Concepts of Biology – Brandon Skenandore

Intro:

  1. Biology – the study of life
  2. Science & the scientific method
  3. Main theories in Biology today
  4. Intro to evolutionary concepts

Biology – study of life

Life:

  1. Atoms, molecules
  2. Organelles – things w/in cells (see text)
  3. Grow + reproduce – all organisms
  4. Contain genetic information
  5. Genetic information can change or “mutate” as a result, organisms are variable. All organisms are adapted to environment, some more than others
  6. Living things can obtain energy from their environment
  7. All organisms have metabolism – all of the chemical reactions in a cell, involved in getting & using energy
  8. Living things show regulation – internal coordination
  9. Exhibit homeostasis – internal conditions are relatively stable
  10. Sensitive to our environment
  11. (ecology) organisms interact w/ each other & w/ environment

Biology is a science

Science: deals w/ facts, principles (larger ideas)

Scientific method:

-Observations

-Hypothesis (guess as to why, explain observation) – tentative observation. E.g.,hairy plants are less eaten by insects

-Test hypothesis w/ experiment

-Data analysis

Write a paper, reviewed, published

Theory: set of well-accepted hypotheses

Main themes:

  1. Cell theory
  2. Central Dogma – genetic information in the nucleus of a cell, mostly DNA. Genetic info copied into mRNA, goes to outside of cell, made into protein
  3. Evolution – changes in a population throughout time. Natural selection – process that causes evolution, produces change
  4. Ecology – interactions between organisms & environment

Natural Selection – Process that some organisms do better than others

Requirements for natural selection:

  1. Organisms must be variable.
  2. Organisms can reproduce sexually
  3. Organisms are tested by their environment
