The Effect of Nuclear Proliferation on Society

Nuclear proliferation: term used to describe the rapidly increasing use of nuclear weapons, nuclear power, and nuclear technology.

A nuclear weapon is an implosive device due to either fission or fusion.  Both are huge amounts of energy from very small amounts of mass. First h-bomb was 10 million tons of tnt.

First atomic bomb was tested in 1945 with the code name “manhattan project”

Letter from Albert Einstein and Leo Szillard.

First atomic bomb used to force Japan to surrender in WWII. Scientific design of J. Rober Oppenheimer, “father of the atomic bomb”

“Little Boy” dropped on Hiroshima August 6, 1945

“Fat man” dropped on Nagasaki August 9, 1945

Politicians lie, distort. Idea that nuclear weapons were good was a lie, that it was saving lives.

Many people have different ideas or justification as to why we would do such a thing.

Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) early 1960s. US and Soviet Union signed an international treaty.

Anti-nuclear Movement. Large national movement. June 12, 1982, largest political demonstration took place to end arms race.

Nuclear power is energy that is produced with the use of a controlled nuclear reaction.

1953 Eisenhower introduced “Atoms for Peace” program. First nuclear reactor was EBR-1 in Arco Idaho, started up in December of 1951

Most amount of nuclear research is done in Idaho.
